Richmond Quarter Stage 1: Richmond Traders Project Lighting Solutions

Richmond Quarter is a multi-stage mixed-use development which features a vibrant market hall, tenancies, activated laneways, complete supermarkets and an extensive residential offering. The site saw the revitalisation of the Coles arcade on Bridge Road that across previous years has seen poor utilisation and activation of tenancies. The project intended to bring life back into the poorly utilised corner precinct to match with a highly active and energised community. The development incorporates a series of laneways, offering narrower, ‘hidden’ locations for tenancies – very much reflecting Melbourne’s well-known scene. Landscaped and garden areas are featured throughout and over the building, providing outdoor settings for residents, visitors, and shoppers.

The buildings take architectural and design cues from Richmond’s rich industrial past – with use of textural, profiled concrete, metal roofing and detailing. The Specialist Projects team at Aglo were pleased to work with Prime to manage, manufacture and supply custom designed fittings and an extensive value-managed lighting package of premium products, ensuring the package met the design intent and performance requirements with a short lead time from approval to delivery.

Richmond Quarter comprised multiple project construction stages over a two-year period. Stage One brought to life Richmond Traders, a mixed-use fresh food and dining precinct. Stage Two saw the construction of Home Richmond; a multi-residential development with premium one, two and three bedrooms built-to-rent apartments.

Richmond Traders features a wide range of Mondolux, specially-sourced Aglo Projects products and bespoke decorative lighting products across the Market Hall. We also supplied an extensive base build lighting package, including the concierge lobby; four apartment building lobbies; corridors and common areas; public end of trip and amenities areas; and public garden areas and landscaping. An array of fittings were used across this project including: Mondolux downlights: Benson Fixed White, Benson Adjustable White, Cannes Midi Black, Mondolux spotlights: Hartley Black, Catania Mini Black, Mondolux extrusion; Stealth 1707 silver, Stealth 1715 silver and Linear LED Kits with Mondolux Neon Flex Top Bendable.

Aglo’s dynamic projects team and in-house assembly facilities meant that we were able to tailor multiple Mondolux products to the meet the project requirements, demonstrating our ability to source, handle and supply the best lighting products with guaranteed quality, innovative design, while keeping a strong focus on project and value management. Such products included: Galaxy Mini 80W highbay utilised to meet the project aesthetic requirements, but was underrun to 40W to meet wattage/energy density requirements. The Aglo Lighting Design team worked closely with Prime’s engineering team to review and confirm the lighting design for the Mondolux highbay across the Market Hall area to confirm illuminance, uniformity, prevent hotspotting and ensure all compliance requirements were met for safe movement in public areas. Aglo customised Mondolux Cannes Midi with remote drivers and internal wiring to suit installation in suspended cable trays and concrete slab ceilings. Customisation of multiple Mondolux Outdoor products to suit specific project requirements (24V DC wall lights, shallow height uplights to meet concrete depth limits and custom spike mounting for several items). The underrunning of Mondolux Verdi Up/Down wall lights and converting to down-only to meet required design/aesthetic when turned on. Mondolux Catania Mini spotlights were converted to adjustable recessed (with recessed ceiling canopy) with remote DALI drivers to meet required aesthetic brief. The Aglo Lighting Design team also worked with Prime and other stakeholders to select the correct beam angles for the Mondolux Catania Mini recessed spotlights to ensure that all Lobby fittings were fit-for-purpose, ranging from providing general illumination to providing targeted lighting to illuminate artworks in the lobby areas. Mondolux Venice Maxi spotlights were converted to surface mounted (integral DALI driver) for installation on concrete walls in multi-story vaulted Atrium space within the Market Hall area. Mondolux Venice Maxi tracklights converted to tuneable white (2700K-6500K) with integral DALI DT8 driver to ensure maximum adjustability in front of Coles area. Decorative products for this project included glass pendants.

The Aglo Specialist Projects team provided extensive service across the project including driver calculations and layouts, problem solving, sourcing and customising fittings, working closely with Prime’s estimating/project management team to ensure all targets were met. In addition, the project ran through challenging conditions during Melbourne’s COVID lockdowns and restrictions and was an exercise in great communication, diligence, attention to detail and service from Aglo.
