Schools & University Lighting

We understand the unique lighting requirements that are required by education facilities such as primary schools, secondary schools, and universities.

Within an educational facility, it is important that each element increases learning and productivity levels. Lighting within the education sphere requires an evaluation of the impact of natural light from windows; the integration of technology being used; and the nature of the tasks being undertaken. Natural light is often encouraged as it has long been known to positively affect the mood, energy, and concentration.

During our lighting design process for schools & universities, a key consideration is colour temperature. Cooler white light sources encourage greater focus and may improve performance; conversely, warmer colour temperatures may be a better option for engaging young children in calmer activities. We also consider the recommended specific levels of light or illuminance in accordance with Australian Standards. For example, AS/NZS 1680.2.3 states the recommended lux levels for educational facilities; these levels vary due to the wide range of tasks which are involved. Aglo’s experience and specialist skills allow us to navigate these standard, recommended levels and requirements to ensure that all safety, compliance and visual comfort recommendations are met.

An example of the varying lux levels required for common educational areas under AS/NZS 1680.2.3 are below.

  • General Use: 240 lux
  • Examinations: 240 lux
  • Laboratories: 320 lux
  • Lecture rooms: 240 lux
  • Reading rooms: 320 lux
  • Sewing rooms:
    • (a) General: 320 lux
    • (b) Task areas: 800 lux

To maximise usability and multi-functional areas, our designs consider dimming and control requirements for areas where presentations might be made on large screens, or where electric whiteboards are installed. Responsive, customisable dimming also mitigates glare and eye strain that can be caused by prolonged screen use; daylight sensors can be used to scale back lighting output to take advantage of natural lighting through windows and reduce utility costs.

Often educational facilities must balance tight budgets with the need to provide a safe and efficient environment for students. When specifying lighting in a school or university, LED lighting offers savings in both cost and maintenance. With a longer lifespan LED lights need to be replaced less often than traditional fluorescent lights. LED lights also require less energy to run and do not have flicker issues.

As there are diverse spaces within an educational facility, our inhouse lighting designers can model each space to achieve results in line with Australian Standard requirements and provide a space that enhances your students’ learning capabilities.
