Architectural Lighting at Canterbury Leagues Club: Custom Designs by Aglo Systems

Canterbury Leagues Club, a premier hospitality venue in Sydney, is renowned for its five-star amenities, including restaurants, coffee shops, multiple bars, entertainment lounges, and a 24-hour health club. In a significant refurbishment spanning 18 months, Aglo Systems was enlisted to provide custom architectural lighting solutions that enhanced the venue’s visual appeal and functionality. Working alongside Point of View (POV) lighting design and Altis Architecture, Aglo’s custom team created bespoke light fittings that elevated the interior design, making Canterbury Leagues Club a standout destination for style and hospitality.

Bespoke Lighting Solutions for Canterbury Leagues Club – Part 1: Bakehouse Café

Aglo Systems was responsible for designing and fabricating custom light fittings throughout the Bakehouse Café. These designs combined aesthetic elegance with energy-efficient LED technology, ensuring ambience and sustainability.

The Pavilion Pendant  

This stunning centrepiece at the Bakehouse Café was crafted using various aluminium machining processes and electroplated in brushed dark brass. It features 12 low-voltage G4 LED lamps, each encased in an ice crystal glass sphere, creating a warm, inviting glow that enhances the café’s modern yet cosy atmosphere.

Ceiling-Mounted Light Feature  

A collaboration between Aglo Systems, POV lighting, and Altis Architecture, this feature incorporates steel and custom-blown glass explicitly shaped to complement the steel framework. The fixture includes two light sources: an LED module in the centre providing downward illumination and an LED strip around the top to wash the ceiling in soft light. This dual lighting approach balances task lighting with atmospheric effect.

Hand-Blown Glass Pendants  

Six separate fittings were installed throughout the café, featuring 550mm smoked orange hand-blown glass bodies encased in a dark brass frame. A decorative filament LED bulb illuminates each pendant, adding vintage charm to the contemporary design. The pendants were completed after multiple design phases, resulting in a timeless feature that enhances the café’s welcoming ambience.

Part 2: Corridor and Lounge Area – Architectural Lighting Features

The lighting design extended into the corridors and lounge areas, where Aglo Systems delivered custom fittings that seamlessly integrated with the architectural elements of the space. These lights added both functional illumination and aesthetic depth to the venue.

Corridor Sphere Lights  

Each corridor featured frosted glass spheres (200mm in diameter), attached to vertical beams and illuminated by E14 lamps. Eight spheres were strategically placed to create soft, diffused lighting that guides guests along the corridor. In contrast, corridor pendant lights feature a sleek design—100mm diameter cylinders suspended from decorative rods with brushed dark brass frames and walnut timber end caps, illuminated by a single LED strip for even light distribution.

Library Chandelier  

In the club’s library, Aglo Systems installed an intricate chandelier composed of electroplated steel and 30 hand-cut crystal droppers. Suspended from black fabric cables, each crystal is illuminated by a G9 LED lamp, adding elegance and sophistication to the room’s ambience.

Banquette Chandelier  

This unique feature comprises 13 bent steel tubes arranged in a semi-circle around a pole. Each tube is illuminated by an E27 light bulb, creating a minimalist yet eye-catching design. The chandelier’s simplicity and elegance perfectly balance the dining area’s interior.

Lounge Area Light Fittings  

The lounge area lighting consists of three polished and electroplated brass tubes arranged in an eye-catching configuration. Laser-cut decorative mesh in front of the three E27 LED lamps adds texture and intrigue to this sophisticated feature, providing both functional lighting and a visual highlight.

Part 3: Gaming Floor – Modern Hospitality Lighting Solutions

In the final stage of the project, Aglo Systems tackled the gaming floor, where large-scale custom chandeliers were installed to enhance the grandeur of the space.

Main Gaming Chandeliers  

Spanning 2.8 meters in diameter, these chandeliers consist of 40 bent tubes arranged in layers to create a visually stunning piece. Each tube is illuminated by a single LED lamp, while the central column houses 8 E27 globes, adding depth and warmth to the lighting. Finished in polished gold, the chandeliers are true statement pieces, elevating the overall ambience of the gaming floor.

Gaming Cashier Pendant  

Located in front of the cashier desk, this pendant comprises three rings of varying diameters, each illuminated in a different direction. The opal acrylic diffuser softens the light, while the Onyx Pearl gloss finish adds a touch of luxury to the cashier area, enhancing both form and function.

Column Wall Lights  

39 wall lights were installed across the gaming floor, each casting light upwards and downwards. The combination of a gloss black finish and directional lighting adds an element of sophistication, while the gold interior finish of the columns creates an elegant contrast.

Pod Seating Chandeliers  

Off the bar area, these chandeliers are a larger version of the bar pendants, featuring clusters of 6 and 12 spheres joined together in an offset arrangement. The polished brass structure and clear glass spheres create a dynamic focal point, adding light and style to the seating area.

Bar Pendants  

Spread across the length of the bar, these five fittings consist of clear glass spheres connected by polished brass structures. Each pendant illuminates the space while complementing the modern yet luxurious design of the bar area.
