Designer

James Meikle studied a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with Honours and a Bachelor of Design majoring in Industrial Design at Monash University. James was guided into the engineer and design field due to his interest in design and desire to understand the way things work. From a design perspective, James always considers the form and function of the feature equally, creating a design that is practical as well as attractive. Determining how the intricacies of the design, such as how it will be manufactured to accurately convey the initial concept is James’ favourite part of the custom process. His favourite material to work with is timber due to its ability to add a natural feeling of warmth to a feature “its versatility and uniqueness provides a detail of individuality to a custom design” he says.

James has engineered and consulted through the design process for custom manufactured projects: The Star Sydney, The Star Darling (Gold Coast), Chadstone Shopping Centre, Hilton Hotel Melbourne, Next Hotel Melbourne, Dorsett Hotel Gold Coast, Crown Perth, and Crown Melbourne. His favourite piece created thus far is a feature which is located in the centre off a 3-story spiral staircase. The feature is made up of chain links that are concentrically layered, and the ends are shaped into a wave pattern. The chain links replicate falling water and the unique shape of the chain pattern is a snapshot in time. As the chain links are not ridged, they are never truly stationary which creates movement throughout the feature and in the reflection of the lighting the ceiling.
