Commercial Lighting Supply
Schools & Universities
We understand the unique lighting challenges that education facilities such as Primary Schools, Secondary Schools and Universities encounter. Within an educational facility, it is important that each element is there to increase learning and productivity levels. Lighting in the education department requires the evaluation of natural light available from windows, integration of technology being used and tasks being undertaken. Natural light is often encouraged as it has long been known to positively affect the mood, energy and concentration.
During our lighting design process for Schools & Universities we consider the colour temperature where a cool white light source makes students more focused and performance improving whereas a warmer light may be a better option for engaging young children in calmer activities. We also consider specific levels of light or illuminance recommended, in accordance with Australian Standards. AS/NZS 1680.2.3 states the recommended lux levels for educational facilities which vary due to the wide range of tasks which are involved.
See below the appropriate lux levels for common educational areas according to AS/NZS 1680.2.3:
- General Use – 240 lux
- Examinations – 240 lux
- Laboratories – 320 lux
- Lecture rooms – 240 lux
- Reading rooms – 320 lux
- Sewing rooms:
- (a) General – 320 lux
- (b) Task area – 800 lux
Dimming features are also considered if there are areas where presentations will be made on large screens or electric whiteboards to maximise usability. Dimming also mitigates glare and eye strain that can be caused by prolonged screen use. Often educational facilities must balance tight budgets while providing a safe and efficient environment for students. When specifying lighting in a school or university, LED lighting offers savings in both cost and maintenance. With a longer lifespan LED lights need to replaced less often than traditional fluoresent lights. LED lights also require less energy to run and don’t have flicker issues.
As there are diverse spaces within an educational facility, our inhouse lighting designers can determine the best colour rendering results and achieve an overall space that enhances your students’ learning.
